Affordability

The City of Racine faces ongoing challenges that directly impact affordability and community well-being. Persistent poverty, a shortage of affordable housing, stagnant wages, and limited access to essential services have created conditions where too many residents struggle to achieve stability. These issues are not separate from public safety—they are at its core. When families lack secure housing, economic opportunity, and access to support systems, communities become more vulnerable to crime, instability, and long-term disinvestment.

My approach to affordability addresses the root causes of insecurity through coordinated and practical action. We will:

  • Strengthen Social Support Networks: Expand access to essential services for residents who are currently underserved. This includes improving connections to job training, healthcare, childcare, mental health services, and transportation. By building a stronger, more accessible social safety net, we empower individuals and families to achieve stability and reduce the conditions that contribute to crime.

  • Transform Vacant Properties into Affordable Housing: Repurpose vacant schools and underutilized buildings into quality, affordable housing. This approach not only addresses the housing shortage but also revitalizes neglected spaces, reduces blight, and creates safer neighborhoods.

  • Promote Economic Mobility and Workforce Development: Align workforce development programs with the needs of local employers to create pathways to stable, well-paying jobs. A stronger workforce supports both individual success and broader economic growth.

  • Support Smart, Sustainable Development: Recognize that failing to address housing, poverty, and wage stagnation will continue to limit Racine’s ability to attract new businesses and investment. Strategic development efforts must prioritize inclusivity and long-term community benefit.

Affordability begins with opportunity and safety. Thriving communities are built when residents have access to housing, jobs, and essential services. Improving instability in Racine requires more than enforcement—it requires investment in people, places, and partnerships. By addressing the underlying economic and social challenges facing our city, we can create a safer, stronger, and more prosperous community for all.
